Once Upon A Forest

Well our vacation is over and we're right back into the drudgery of our daily routines. We are kicking off again with a slew of Audience Requests and at the front of the line is perhaps our most, or at least one of our most requested movies.

None of us can figure out why.

Really. There is nothing at all in this movie.

We Review Once Upon A Forest.

  1. I'd say a director who has that same magic Miyazaki has would be Naoko Yamada. I'd highly recommend her recent film, A Silent Voice, when it releases in the US.

Yamada also shared a few interesting thoughts on the same subject you mentioned, the 'magic of the mundane' - one quote that stuck out to me that it wasn't really about dialogue or even the characters themselves, so much as character animation. The idea that just the way a character moved in the space around them could constitute 'dialogue,' 'exposition,' even 'plot.' I can definitely see what she means. Even when a character technically isn't doing anything interesting, just the way, say, Kiki grasps onto her broom as she flies or fumbles slightly before regaining her balance, tells us a lot about who she is and where she's going.

Great podcast as always, guys. Glad to have you back.
